More data peeps should be thinking about entrepreneurship (IMO)

Let’s be honest: traditional data careers are looking shakier by the day. AI is evolving quickly, and ā€œsafeā€ corporate paths ain’t looking quite so safe anymore. The irony is that many of you who are nervously eyeing AI as a threat are actually sitting on one of the best skillsets for making the leap into entrepreneurship.

Because what is entrepreneurship if not a giant business problem to solve?

And what are data people, if not giant problem solvers? (we come in all sizes really)

Think about it for a sec: You analyse. You execute. You measure. You learn. You iterate. Sound familiar? That’s basically the day job for many people working in the space!

this you?

So why aren’t more of us applying those skills to starting businesses?

Well, the truth is, a lot of us already are…

Across industries, more people are walking away from the well‑trodden corporate path to start businesses, side hustles, and independent practices. Surveys show record numbers of professionals are pursuing entrepreneurship as a serious alternative to climbing the ladder. In other words, the appetite for independence is higher than ever.

Where to start if you’re curious

The good news is that you don’t have to burn your corporate bridges and launch into the void. The smarter play is to treat entrepreneurship like an experiment. Start small, keep the downside minimal, and validate before you quit your day job. AI tools now make this ten times easier by lowering costs and accelerating workflows.

If you’re wondering what path to pick, here are three broad avenues that work particularly well for people with data and leadership backgrounds:

  • Product / SaaS: Building tools, platforms, or niche products that solve problems you already understand deeply.

  • Services: Consulting, coaching, fractional leadership, or spinning up a boutique agency. You already know how much companies struggle to use data effectively so why not package your expertise as a service? Could be the quickest route to revenue there is.

  • Content & education: Courses, newsletters, communities, playbooks. You’ve got insights others want. Turning that into something teachable can build both income and reputation.

The key is to start with something that plays to your existing strengths. Don’t reinvent yourself from scratch. If you’ve spent ten years solving data problems, maybe don’t start a candle‑making empire. Unless, of course, you really like candles.

The mindset shift

If you take one thing away from this, let it be this: approach entrepreneurship with the same analytical, experiment‑driven mindset you bring to data. Strip the emotion out of it. Run small tests. Let the market tell you if you’re on the right track.

And remember, you don’t need to do it alone. Plenty of people in our field are already making the jump, and their stories are proof that it’s possible.
