Times are tough in the data industry.

For a long time, data teams have coasted. Many of them have been happy hiding away in the basement, responding to ad hoc business requests, writing SQL code and building nifty dashboards that no one looks at.

It’s very hard to see teams working this way as anything other than an overhead/cost centre.

But those time are swiftly coming to an end.

Leadership teams have grown tired of throwing good money after bad, and are beginning to apply the pressure that data teams should have felt a long time ago.

The rise of AI has redoubled the importance of access to reliable, high-quality data, while the pressure to deliver value and justify investments and budgets is growing as organizations scrutinize every expenditure to ensure it delivers ROI.

Data teams and their leaders are now being held accountable for adding value!

This week I was invited to take part in a discussion with Adrianna Shukla at Snowplow.

The discussion focused on one of the most important and timely questions in the data space right now:

“How can data teams demonstrate the value of their work to leadership?”

This week, instead of writing about this topic, I’ve decided to share the interview with you so you can check it out for yourself. (Scroll down to see!)

The interview was focused around 4 key topics:

  • How can data teams align their work with revenue and business outcomes in a way leadership actually cares about?

  • What’s one mistake you see data teams make when trying to showcase their value to executives?

  • How do you recommend data teams balance long-term strategic projects with short-term, high-visibility wins?

  • What’s one skill or mindset shift that you think would help data teams better communicate their impact?

Dive into the video to take a look at how I’ve addressed these crucial and timely topics!
